essay by JERRY GARRETT
Missouri native and St. Louis resident Jerry Garrett has
a penchant for collecting unusual things. For 20 years he
has been visiting and collecting photos of the homes and
graves of all the signers of the Declaration of
Independence. So, a driving trip to visit all 114
Missouri courthouses in the summer and fall of 2007
seemed like another interesting sojourn.
“I’ve always loved to drive, explore the countryside and
go through small towns,” Garrett says. “And, as a small
child I remember being mesmerized by the courthouse in my
hometown of Richmond, Missouri.
“Also, the courthouses were fairly close together so
several could be covered in a day. They made good
targets. I felt I was accomplishing something each time I
found one,” he recalls.
