Driving south from Hannibal, we entered a chemical town. Literally. Named by chemist L.P. Sprout, Ilasco is an acronym for the ingredients in cement: iron, lime, aluminum, silica, calcium and oxygen. The Atlas Cement Company built a plant just south of Mark Twain Cave in 1903, and soon the area became a melting pot of immigrant workers from Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy and Poland.
